Musical Balloons -- Sabbath Activity #10

Theme and Rationale:

We often desire to get people to participate in sharing their feelings and values but are at a loss as to how to get it started or how to trigger people to be involved comfortably.

Musical Balloons offers a way to have a broad spectrum of people take part in this type of sharing in a manner that only seems fast-paced. The reality is that depth can be attained without people feeling that they're being threatened.

Minimum Time Required:

More than an hour would probably not be effective.

Preparation and Materials:

Get a number of balloons, and have only one that is an odd color from the rest. ( You might use all green balloon except for a red one. )

On small pieces of paper write a number of leading statements:

  • "When I was a kid, I wanted to be a . . . "
  • "I want Jesus to return when . . . "
  • "To me, $______ is the least that I would call a lot of money."
  • "If I could go back in life to start over, it would be when . . . "
  • "I'd like to ask God three questions . . . "
  • "The Bible character I like least is . . . "
  • "I really like ____________ about the person on my right."
  • " I don't understand why Jesus . . . "
  • "The first lie I ever told was . . . "
  • "I'm most afraid of . . . "
  • "My pet peeve is . . . "
  • "I get really frustrated with . . . "

Those type of statements would be written on individual pieces of paper and put into a balloon. ( Sources for questions / statements could be The Ungame, The Question Book, or Is Your Dog Jewish? )

Also you'll need to provide a cassette or CD player to provide the music, which you'll start and stop for the event.

How To:

Seat all the participants in a circle. Explain that this is like musical chairs except no one is going to get squashed and no chairs are going to be broken. Instead, you'll begin the music and they'll pass the balloons to the right.

When the music stops, the person with the odd-color balloon must take one of the other balloons and pop it. He or she is to read the statement on the piece of paper and then respond to the group.

If you have seven in your group, it's best to have about 15 balloons and replenish them as they get popped. When you get down to an equal number of balloons to people, then you'll begin to eliminate the person who has to pop the balloon -- have him or her respond and then move out of the circle.

When the last person remains, he or she pops the odd-color balloon and reads a piece of paper that asks him or her to lead the group in a blessing prayer.

How It Has Worked:

This has been a good event, because it 's active without getting anyone hurt or requiring great athletic skills. Almost all of us can hand off a balloon without making fools of ourselves!

It also gets people to open up and reveal themselves in a manner that doesn't appear heavy. It gives a chance for people to reveal their feelings.

There's relatively no age limitation, and this activity works with a broad spectrum of people.

Bonus Idea:

If you number the balloons and have them broken in a specific order, they can provide leading questions or verses for a Sabbath school lesson discussion with juniors and earliteens.
